These two services often get confused, and sometimes both are needed at the same visit. Here’s a simple way to think about it:
Septic pumping removes the accumulated waste from inside your tank — the solids and liquids that build up over time. It’s a routine maintenance service every septic system needs on a regular schedule.
Drain cleaning addresses blockages in the pipes — either the lines coming from your home into the tank, or the lines distributing effluent out to the drain field. If your system is backing up even though the tank was recently pumped, the problem is almost certainly in the lines, not the tank.
In some cases, a backup is caused by an overfull tank pushing waste back into the lines. In those situations, we pump first and assess from there. We’ll diagnose the actual cause before recommending any work.

How do I know if my drain problem is in the pipes or the septic tank?
A good indicator is whether one drain is affected or multiple drains throughout the house. A single slow drain usually points to a localized clog in that fixture’s line. When multiple drains back up simultaneously — especially if the lowest drains in the house are the first to show problems — that typically points to a blockage further down the main sewer line or an issue with the tank itself. We’ll pinpoint the source when we come out.
Is hydro-jetting safe for older pipes?
In most cases, yes — high-pressure water jetting is safe and is actually gentler on pipes than some mechanical methods. That said, if your home has very old clay or cast iron pipes that are already deteriorating, we’ll assess the condition before jetting and let you know if there’s anything to be cautious about. We won’t recommend a method that could cause more harm than good.
How often should drain field lines be cleaned?
There’s no universal answer, but for most systems that are properly maintained and not overloaded, periodic jetting every few years as part of a routine maintenance program is sufficient. Systems that have had biomat issues, a history of heavy use, or are showing early signs of stress may benefit from more frequent attention. We’ll give you a recommendation based on what we observe when we’re on site.
Can tree roots really damage my sewer line?
Yes, and it’s one of the most common issues we see in the Lancaster area. Tree roots are naturally drawn to the moisture and nutrients in sewer lines. They enter through small cracks or joint gaps and grow over time, eventually causing significant restrictions or complete blockages. Jetting can clear the roots, but if the intrusion is severe and recurring, a pipe repair or lining may be the longer-term solution. We’ll let you know where things stand after the cleaning.
What’s the difference between snaking and hydro-jetting?
Snaking (also called rodding or augering) uses a rotating metal cable to punch through a clog. It works well for simple, localized blockages. Hydro-jetting uses highly pressurized water to completely clear the pipe walls — it removes grease, scale, biofilm, and roots more thoroughly than a snake can. For recurring clogs or drain field line maintenance, jetting is generally the more effective and longer-lasting solution.
